Raga (melody) und tala (rhythm) are the basic elements of India’s classical music. Unlike its western counterpart, this sonic cosmos does without harmony – a fact that has brought creative responses from composers such as Philip Glass and Param Vir. All the more interesting, then, is the confluence of these two worlds of music, as arranged by Deutsche Welle and the Beethovenfest in their annual ‘Campus Project’. The German National Youth Orchestra will join forces with a percussion ensemble consisting of five Indian and five German musicians in search of connection links.
